| Short History of the Mediterranean Kidney Society | |||
The idea of a society of nephrology devoted to study the specific problems affecting the countries on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea (more than 400 million inhabitants), was nurtured by Prof. Guido Bellinghieri and Prof. Natale G De Santo in spring 2005. Thus, a Mediterranean Renal Association (MEREA) was founded and a scientific international event was organized on October 23, 2005 as part of the 7th Taormina Course. Main speakers were nephrologists from Italy, Egypt, Slovenia, Israel, and Morocco. The discussions, which took place during and after the meeting, generated the conviction that a Mediterranean Kidney Society would better serve the interest of nephrologists working in the Mediterranean area. To this end Prof. Bellinghieri and Prof. De Santo were encouraged to work for that in close contact with prominent nephrologists of the countries on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the unifying sea. The next step was the merging of MEREA with MENEA (Mediterranean Nephrology Association) a Sicily based society. The Societies merged into the “Mediterranean Kidney Society”, abbreviated as MKS(in Italian Società Mediterranea del Rene). The notary document was prepared in Siracusa in the office and with the help of the Notary, Dr. Annio De Luca on June 26, 2009. The agreement was signed by Guido Bellinghieri, and Natale G De Santo, for MEREA and by Giuseppe Daidone, Pasquale Fatuzzo, Salvatore Gianni, Maurizio Li Vecchi, Silvio Maringhini for MENEA.
